Wild Card Weekend Recap

This was the first week of the Playoffs, and it certainly was WILD.

Andrew Luck and the Colts came back from a 28-point second half deficit, Shayne Graham nailed a game-winning Field Goal to lift the Saints over the Eagles in Philadelphia, and that was just the FIRST DAY.

You got everything you could've wanted: a high-scoring shootout [Kansas City 44 Indianapolis 45,] a big upset [San Diego 27 Cincinnati 10,] and TWO yes TWO game-winning kicks as time expired [San Francisco 23 Green Bay 20, New Orleans 26, Philadelphia 24.]

It was a great week to be a Chargers fan, or Colts fan, or Saints fan, or 49ers fan, or just a FOOTBALL FAN.

It was a  TERRIBLE week for Cincinnati Bengals Quarterback Andy Dalton whose highly-favored Bengals lost 27-10 to San Diego in a game they should have won. [I was one of the few people who predicted a San Diego upset.]

All in all, I was 3-1 on picks with the lone mistake being that I put too much faith in Nick Foles and the Eagles and not enough in Sean Payton and the Saints.

Players of the Week

Offense: WR Michael Crabtree, San Francisco 49ers

Defense: LB Robert Mathis, Indianapolis Colts

Special Teams: K Phil Dawson, San Francisco 49ers

Overall: QB, Philip Rivers, San Diego Chargers

Jay Cutler gets 7-year contract extension

There has been speculation all season as to whether or not the Chicago Bears would give Quarterback Jay Cutler a contract extension.

 Well, it's happened.

While Cutler was an above-average starting Quarterback during his time with the Broncos, he has had an up-and-down tenure in Chicago so far.

Cutler will turn 31 this year which means by the time his contract is up he will be 38. He'll likely only be a Franchise Quarterback for a few more years. $50 million of the contract is guaranteed, a high number for a Quarterback who has not played all 16 games in a season since 2009.

Another deciding factor would be his stats, however these have been very lackluster:

Jay Cutler By The Numbers [only his statistics from his time with the Bears are given]

2009

7-9 336 of 555 60.5 Cmp% 3,666 yds 27 TD's 26 int's 6.6 YPA 76.8 Rating

2010

10-5 261 of 432 60.4 Cmp% 3,274 yds 23 TD's 16 int's 7.6 YPA 86.3 Rating

2011

7-3 182 of 314 58.0 Cmp% 2,319 yds 13 TD's 7 int's 7.4 YPA Rating 85.7

2012

10-5 255 of 434 58.8 Cmp% 3,033 yds 19 TD's 14 int's YPA 7.0 Rating 81.3

2013

5-6 224 of 355 63.1 Cmp% 19 TD's 12 int's 7.4 YPA 89.2 Rating

I was one of the people who believed the Bears should re-sign Jay Cutler but he is set to be one of the highest-paid Quarterbacks in the NFL, and while I agree with the front office in re-signing Jay Cutler I would have only signed him for 3-4 years with an option for an additional year and around $11-12 million a year compared to the 7-year $18 million a year contract monstrosity he is "earning."

Overall I say it depends on how much longer Cutler is a quality NFL Quatrterback to decide whether this is a good deal for Chicago going forward or not.

NBA Power Rankings #4

NBA Power Rankings #4
1. Indiana Pacers 25-6
The Pacers look like the team to beat in the East while Roy Hibbert is further showcasing why he should be Defensive Player of the Year.
Last Ranking: 1
2. Oklahoma City Thunder 25-6
Yes, star PG Russell Westbrook is out until after the All-Star break. But backup Reggie Jackson is playing at such a high level that OKC should carry on just fine during his absence. The real worry, however, should be that this is his third knee surgery in 8 months.
Last Ranking: 3
3. Miami Heat 24-7
Dwayne Wade has shown signs of life amidst recent knee problems but one of the biggest question marks is whether Shane Battier should continue to start.
Last Ranking: 5
4. San Antonio Spurs 25-7
San Antonio looks like the same team that made the NBA Finals last season and the new big 3 in big D (hey that rhymes) is Tony Parker, Tim Duncan, and Kawhi Leonard. They are a dark-horse in the crowded West.
Last Ranking: 4
5. Portland Trailblazers 25-7
While Portland has cooled off considerably, Damian Lillard and Lamarcus Aldridge create a nice scoring duo. But can they win when it REALLY matters?
Last Rankings: 2
6. Los Angeles Clippers 22-12
Chris Paul is dishing highlight reel-filling dunks to the likes of Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan while allowing opponents to do the same with a bottom-tier defense, the Clippers are must-see TV.
Last Ranking: 7
7. Houston Rockets 21-13
Dwight Howard hit his prime in Orlando and hasn't been the same since bolting for L.A. The Rockets though, are legitimate contenders in the West if Howard can maintain the high level he is playing at.
Last Ranking: 6
8. Golden State Warriors 20-13
Live by the jump shot, die by the jump shot. No team relies on the jump shot as much as Golden State (except perhaps Miami) with Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, David Lee, and Harrison Barnes all being jump shooters. Right now, the Warriors are living by the jump shot.
Last Ranking: 13
9. Phoenix Suns 19-11
If you thought Miles Plumlee could be a key rotational player, then you have a real eye for talent. But seriously, how has Eric Bledsoe made the jump from solid-backup Point Guard to above-average starting Point Guar? No answer from the Sports Kid.
Last Ranking: 8
10. Dallas Mavericks 19-13
Dirk Nowvitzki finally has a sidekick that can create his own shot in Monta Ellis but the Mavs have nonetheless cooled off since a hot start to the season.
Last Ranking: 11
11. Toronto Raptors 15-15
Last Ranking: 20
